This report presents research, technical rationale, and methodology for mechanical smoke control systems to support archetype building design of up to six storeys containing a residential occupancy served by a single exit stair (SES). The information supports potential approaches towards alternative solutions compliance and is not intended for prescriptive compliance with any particular building code or by-law. Six different mechanical smoke control systems have been reviewed and discussed. Two systems (Direct 1 and Direct 2) were evaluated fully using advanced numerical modelling.
